Canadians can bypass Hawaii's mandatory quarantine with new testing program

Negative virus test required for Hawaii travelers

"We welcome Gov. Ige's announcement today designating Air Canada as one of Hawaiʻi's Trusted Travel partners and extending the State of Hawaiʻi's pre-travel testing program to Air Canada's customers. We look forward to our Honolulu and Maui flights from Vancouver and Calgary starting mid-December onboard our state-of-the-art Dreamliner aircraft, featuring our industry-leading Air Canada ClearCare+ biosafety measures", said Timothy Liu, Managing Director, Sales Planning at Air Canada. More details can be found here. "It's really exciting for us to know that Hawaii really is the very first place that is a safe corridor for travel from Canada". Programs like this that provide viable, effective and alternative options to blanket quarantine requirements, are an important step to safely reopen travel around the world.

Canadian nationals traveling overseas are still subject to a 14-day quarantine upon their return to the country.

Note: Health Canada does not advise you to get a COVID-19 test if you do not have symptoms of the virus.

Although several travel clinics in the Lower Mainland offer pre-travel COVID-19 testing, these clinics are not approved by the State of Hawaii for the program.

The new conference was held to announce an adjustment to the pre-arrival testing program that will allow arrivals to bypass the 14-day mandatory quarantine with a negative test result.

"This means that we've been able to do Safe Travels, we've been able to restore some hope to our people in advance of the holidays and we've been able to keep people healthy", added Green, who also noted that most of Hawaii's spread is not due to incoming travellers.

However, some travellers who arrived in Hawaii without their test results wound up later testing positive.

However, Ige said he did not think the change would deter potential visitors.

To bypass the 14-day quarantine, travellers must have the correct type of COVID-19 negative test results from one of the state's trusted testing partners, Ige said. You must update your test results, otherwise you will face the 14-day quarantine. Since a negative result is required for the Hawaiian pre-testing program, this would go against public health advice. "As an island community, we must take precautions to ensure that our hospitals have the staff, equipment and supplies needed to care for those in need of treatment, whether they have the coronavirus or any other medical condition".
