Senate Panel Wraps Confirmation Hearings for Trump's Supreme Court Pick

"I think her entire campaign is: she's a Marine, she's a mom and I've been there (the Senate) too long", McConnell said.

He said, however, that President Trump is talking about "a much larger amount (for coronavirus relief) than I can sell to my members" in the Senate.

The Trump administration offered a $1.8 trillion deal this week, which would offer another round of stimulus checks and aid for airlines and other industries. The Republican leader has set up a vote next week on a roughly $500 billion GOP package, and he indicated Thursday that Senate Republicans would balk at a deal as big as Trump is floating.

McConnell pointed the finger at Democrats in the House of Representatives, while tying McGrath to the national Democratic Party, saying McGrath is supporting a bill that would give more money to Puerto Rico than to Kentucky.

Trump told Fox Business' Stuart Varney Thursday morning that he said he does think there's a chance a stimulus deal could pass before the election, despite the dwindling time and stalled talks.

President Donald Trump threw the stimulus negotiations into chaos last week when he ordered Mnuchin to halt the talks, but he quickly reversed course.

Trump also expressed some frustration with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who has been negotiating with Pelosi, saying that Mnuchin had thus far failed to convince the speaker to accept a deal.

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee heard arguments Thursday supporting and opposing the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett as the panel finishes four days of hearings to fill a vacancy on the country's highest court.

Trump said Thursday that he did still think a deal is possible before November 3 - "because I think there's a lot of pressure on Pelosi".

McConnell on Thursday said in no uncertain terms that he won't call a vote on a stimulus bill anywhere near the size Pelosi and Mnuchin are discussing.

"His one job is to help America through this crisis right now in passing legislation to keep our economy afloat so that people can make ends meet", she said.

Meanwhile, the economy continues to show evidence of the impact of a withdrawal of past fiscal stimulus - just as anticipated by Federal Reserve policy makers and private economists alike. Initial jobless claims in regular state programs totaled 898,000 in the week ended October 10, exceeding all forecasts in a Bloomberg survey, Labor Department data showed Thursday.

Pelosi has felt pressure from some House Democrats to strike a deal with the administration before the election.

Trump's own undermining of his team, by endorsing a bigger package than they have fought for - and that Senate Republicans oppose - has encouraged the Democrats to hold out. Go big or go home, I said it yesterday.
