The Queen and William formally opened the Energetics Analysis Centre.

The Queen, who is at a greater risk of severe illness from coronavirus because of her age, delivered two rare televised addresses to the nation just weeks apart during the first wave of the pandemic.

They were also being shown the £30 million state-of-the-art Energetics Analysis Centre to meet counter-terrorism staff and see a demonstration of a forensic explosives investigation.

The Queen and Prince William's landmark engagement was carried out under careful measures - with all of those coming into close contact with the Queen and the Duke - 48 people - having been tested for Covid-19.

Queen Elizabeth carried out her first major engagement since a coronavirus lockdown in March, visiting the Porton Down military research facility on Thursday which was involved in dealing with a 2018 Novichok nerve agent attack.

Though living a far more solitary existence, over the past few months, the queen has been a visible presence, most notably in her two televised addresses to the nation from Windsor Castle in April and May, which were partly meant to bolster people's resolve in the face of the lockdown.

"Specific advice has been sought from the medical household and relevant parties, and all necessary precautions taken".

They also met with scientists who have provided what Kensington Palace describes as "vital support" to the United Kingdom response of the COVID-19 pandemic, "working in analytic research areas and deploying microbiologists to NHS hospitals to increase testing capacities", according to the palace.

The Queen also arrived separately from William.

Everyone who met the royals tested negative for the virus. Her Majesty paired it with a coordinating silk dress and hat by Rachel Trevor Morgan.

Her Majesty has reportedly been residing at Windsor Castle this month so she can commute to Buckingham Palace for her limited duties.

The Queen ventured from HMS Bubble - the nickname for her reduced household of staff - for what was her first external engagement in seven months.

According to reports, William, his wife Kate Middleton and their three children joined The Queen and Philip at Balmoral over the summer.
