COVID-19 outbreak declared at Canadian Natural Resources’ Horizon site

Dr. Deena Hinshaw to provide update on COVID-19 in Alberta on Friday afternoon

"The recent outbreaks we have seen in hospitals are one of the reasons for the high hospitalization numbers that we are now seeing", Hinshaw said.

At her Tuesday update, Dr. Deena Hinshaw said the increase in hospitalizations is being driven by the outbreak at the Misericordia as well as an outbreak at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.

"However, this weekend I am asking everyone in the Edmonton zone to continue following these voluntary measures to the best of their ability", she said.

Hinshaw said she remains concerned for the Edmonton Zone, which has 1525 active cases or 54 per cent of Alberta's cases.

"At this time, I am not recommending any additional measures for Calgary, but we are working with local partners to monitor the situation closely".

Hinshaw confirmed the outbreak at Edmonton's Mazankowski Heart Institute and announced an outbreak at the Leduc Community Hospital where two patients tested positive for the coronavirus. "The fewer people you have, the lower the risk of exposure or transmission".

There are 117 patients in hospitals across the province, with 11 of them in ICU.

Calgary zone: 820 cases, up from 788 cases Thursday.

Unknown: 12 cases, down from 16 cases.

Ninety-one schools now have outbreaks, including 22 with five or more cases.

There are now 200 active alerts or outbreaks in schools across the province, totalling 489 COVID-19 cases.

Two full incubation periods, or 28 days, have passed since the last case was reported.

"We can't yet prevent COVID-19 with a vaccine, but we can help stop the flu from taxing our health system", said Hinshaw.

Canada's National Advisory Committee on Immunizations is encouraging all Canadians over the age of six months to get a flu shot, saying vaccination is one of the most effective preventive measures you can take to avoid getting sick.

About 8,500 Albertans contracted the flu last winter, she said, and 41 people died.
