Chelsea boss Frank Lampard confirms Edouard Mendy will not feature Southampton

Southampton grabs a six-goal thriller at Chelsea

Chelsea struck back immediately with a well worked effort, the ever-busy Werner crossing for Havertz to score his first Premier League goal with a simple tap-in, only for the visitors to snatch their last-gasp leveller through Vestergaard. They earned their equaliser in the 57th minute, after some shambolic home defending when Kurt Zouma misjudged a back pass and Kepa missed the ball which Che Adams eventually slammed into the roof of the net.

Southampton's second goal came thanks to a ugly mix-up between Kurt Zouma and Kepa Arrizabalaga, throwing the spotlight once more on Chelsea's defence and in particular their goalkeeper; but Lampard insisted that the ex-Athletic man retained the confidence of his manager and team-mates.

Three minutes later, Southampton pulled one back when Danny Ings rounded goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga after Werner's compatriot Kai Havertz lost the ball deep in the Chelsea half. Ziyech not it to start, but hopefully to get some minutes'. We have to win the game.

"If you're going to concede those kinds of goals it doesn't matter how well you play in periods of games".

Lampard is unable to explain why his side are finding it so hard to keep opponents at bay and close games out, with consistency still proving to be elusive in west London.

"I have a good relationship with Hakim, we've had plenty of honest conversations and yes, I'm very excited to see him play and hopefully we can see him at his best, like he was for Ajax".

The Blues' summer-signing picked up a thigh injury while away on worldwide duty with Senegal, which leaves Lampard with either Kepa Arrizabalaga or Willy Caballero in goal.

"They are great goals".

Chelsea, after all, has scored 13 goals in five league games.

"My message at half-time was that the goal shouldn't change too much". Havertz was dispossessed too easily inside his own half and Adams slipped a pass through to Ings, who got behind the slow-to-react Chelsea defence, glided past Kepa and slotted into the empty net.

"There are attacking players in this league and maybe pre-season and lack of working time plays a part". Get some good goals and we could have had some more.
