US cyclist Chloe Dygert injured in horrific crash at road worlds

Defending champion Chloe Dygert endures horrific crash in Imola as Anna van der Breggen wins world time trial title

Dygert was a favorite of defending her title in the time trial, leading almost half an hour at the mid-checkpoint before losing control on the descent and crossing the roadside barrier. "I know for a fact that she was flown to a hospital in Bologna and that she is being seen by doctors in the emergency room now", she said. Degert wrote in her post.

"I remember thinking I could still win if I could get a bike". "The first thing I remember was the @ JimMiller-time question [USA Cycling chief of sports performance Jim Miller] If I finished ... then I looked down and saw my leg".

"Chloe is a talented athlete", Christine Armstrong said.

The defending champion, who was ahead of the required pace at the time of her crash, lost control at a right-hand corner, wobbled and flipped over a metal guard rail, tumbling down an embankment and sustaining a deep gash to her left leg in the process.

Miller said he was confident Dygert would be back.

The youngster, who has been described as a cycling "prodigy", won silver in the Team Pursuit at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and also has seven track gold medals to her name in combined Individual Pursuit and Team Pursuit events at the World Championships. With Chloe's determination, we know she will come back before we know it.

It was unclear initially whether she was badly hurt although USA Cycling tweeted that she was conscious and talking. "Now we want her to focus on healing".

It wasn't long before Dygert eventually ran out of road and she went crashing into the rails and disappeared into the bushes behind them.

Anna van der Breggen claimed a superb victory in the women's World Championships time trial on a dramatic day of racing.
