"With nationwide developments over the course of the week and the impending postponement of the NCAA FCS Championship, James Madison has suspended its fall football season".

It's hard to imagine a fall in Montana without Bobcat and Grizzly football, but multiple reports, including The Denver Post and sports websites around the country, are reporting the Big Sky Conference does not plan to play football in the fall.

The FCS playoffs were shelved for the fall on Friday after the subdivision fell short of the NCAA mandate that 50 percent of eligible teams participate in regular season play.

The Eagles were scheduled to open Big Sky Conference play at Southern Utah on September 26, followed by its conference home opener versus Montana on October 3. "We already have begun actively engaging our fellow FCS conferences and the NCAA to join us then for what will be a unique opportunity to return to competition and compete for an FCS championship".

The league's five football teams in Montana are still planning to play an eight-game, round-robin schedule this fall.

The MVFC President's Council also voted that competition in Fall 2020 be conducted at institutional discretion, leaving the door open for teams to play non-conference games.

The NCAA this week cancelled Division II fall championships.

With the MAC's 12 schools facing a significant financial burden by trying to maintain costly coronavirus protocols, the conference's university presidents made the decision to explore a spring season.

JMU's decision comes after The Big Sky Conference and Pioneer Football League both announced Friday they will not play football in the fall on 2020 and the Missouri Valley Football Conference is reportedly expected to postpone play until the spring of 2021.

MSU had its first two games of the season canceled - a September.

Reporters from around the Big Sky cited sources in the meetings Thursday who conveyed that a spring season is the likely option.

The University of Montana's season-opening game against Central Washington, which was scheduled for September 5 at Washington-Grizzly Stadium in Missoula, was also canceled. UM released a statement shortly after the PFL's announcement, staying that Morehead State meant to "obtain a waiver from the Pioneer League to play the Montana/Morehead State game as scheduled".
