Verstappen storms to unlikely victory over Mercedes duo

Bottas says Mercedes was 'sleeping' when Verstappen got ahead

The softer rubber indeed made for more pit stops and a more exciting race during the second race at Silverstone. "We could have won last week when they had tyre blowouts, but that would not have been the same, but today was very good because we beat them on pure pace". I didn't have any tire issues and we kept pushing. Max I think was doing 1m29s and I couldn't do that on the old tyre, so congratulations to him, he did a fantastic job.

"Some of the manoeuvres that he pulled, around the outside at Copse on Raikkonen, same with Stroll I think".

Behind the Red Bull, Hamilton overtook Bottas for second place with three laps remaining as the Finn, who had started on pole, got caught on a strategy that tried to attack Verstappen but ultimately left him vulnerable to Hamilton. We will keep a close eye on them.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner says the squad is trying to understand why the pace of its RB16 is comparatively stronger in race trim than it is in qualifying.

Up until Sunday's race, Hamilton had looked on course to gallop towards Michael Schumacher's record haul of championships this year. Bottas is now 34 points adrift.

"This year's auto is, by and large, an evolution of last year's vehicle", he said.

Verstappen did so from fourth on the grid, having been beaten by Racing Point's Nico Hulkenberg, while team-mate Alexander Albon rose from ninth to fifth.

Mercedes chief race engineer Andrew Shovlin admits that there's an "element of urgency" in the team's need to address its tyre blistering problems ahead of Formula 1's Spanish Grand Prix.

When he was asked to ease off in the early stages, to save his tyres, he rejected the idea saying "this is our chance to close up to the Mercedes - so I'm not going to drive like a grandma and follow them!" At one stage, his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, told him to drop off Hamilton's vehicle to protect his tyres.

Verstappen then drove faster to build the gap before finally pitting on lap 27 to swap his fading hard tires for mediums, though a slowish pit stop meant Bottas was able to reclaim the lead.

Verstappen took only a handful of corners to regain top spot after he resisted Bottas' tame defense.

Leclerc performed well to make a one-stopper work on his way to fourth, but teammate Vettel's awful season continued.

Vettel, who is being moved on by Ferrari at the end of this year, spun on the first lap, blasted his team over the radio for a decision on strategy, and crossed the line in 12th.

The four-time world champion is 13th in the championship with just 10 points to his name.
