SEC to Only Play Conference Games This Season

What the 10-game all-SEC schedule means for each program

The Southeastern Conference announced on July 30 that a schedule consisting of only league games would take place due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The SEC changing to a schedule of only conference games means Notre Dame will no longer host Arkansas in week two.

The SEC will play a 10-game conference-only schedule, and if there is any fairness in the new schedule, which was not announced Thursday, the Razorbacks will get to play Vanderbilt, thus ensuring one of the cellar-dwellers of an SEC victory.

With the coronavirus raging in the SEC footprint, the season-opener was pushed back to September 26, giving a much needed three-week cushion before players start going face-to-face on every down. The regular season will run until December 5 and the conference championship game will be held in Charlotte, NC on either December 12 or 19, with the top two teams by conference record getting invitations.

Now that it's clearer that UM will have at least five home games, the next question may be about fan attendance. "The toughest conference in college football is going to battle it out in historic fashion". "I think it'll be interesting to see how one divison, 15 schools plays out this year with our fans". The SEC, however, followed the lead of the Pac-12 and Big Ten in shifting to a conference-only schedule this year.

Yes, the ACC might have played some "dirty pool" (as one high-ranking SEC official said to me) in releasing its schedule the way it did on Wednesday.

This arrangement unfortunately cancels key inter-conference rivalry games such as Florida vs. Florida State and Clemson vs.

Is this a glimpse into the future of college football?

This is a win-win for the most powerful network in the country. Even athletic directors within the conference, including Syracuse AD John Wildhack, have advocated for tweaking the current system so that schools face each other with more regularity.

Wearing a mask, social distancing and washing your hands will not be enough for football players.

This week, Rutgers had to suspend all football activities when several players tested positive for the virus.

While UM President Julio Frenk has repeatedly announced his anticipation that Hurricanes football will take place without fans in 2020, the program's home stadium may be a safer place to welcome spectators than nearly any other stadium in the country.

The young men will have to be focused on playing football and being safe for more than 10 weeks.

Will fans be allowed to attend home game at the Carrier Dome?

Ohio State has announced it will plan for 20% capacity for its 100,000-seat stadium this fall.

It's sad because Florida is not going to play FSU in 2020 if there is a 2020 season. "We're in a hard situation, all of us in this country and in sports, and in the ACC we're trying to find the best path".
