Pac-12 approves 10-game conference-only slate for football

Utes to open at Washington State as Pac-12 releases 10-game football schedule

If the Arizona-Arizona State opener doesn't get played, the in-state rivals share the same bye on October 17. The Cougars, who are not members of any conference, will be forced to drop scheduled games against Utah, Michigan State, Arizona State, Minnesota, Missouri and Stanford.

As for the start date, the conference announced that the 2020 Pac-12 football season will begin on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Games that can't be played on their scheduled date can be made up in teams' bye weeks or in Week 12 (Dec. 12). The conference title game will be held in a home-hosted model for 2020. The 2020 Pac-12 football schedule will also include one mid-season open date and an open date on December 12 for all 14 schools.

"We realize at the moment, those are real hot spots, and the requisite authorities and approvals are not there yet", Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said of California and Arizona. "We preserved the possibility of bowl games".

The Pac-12 is targeting September 26 as the start date for its revised, conference-only football schedule, and on Friday it announced dates for all the teams' games. The conference athletic directors know this.

The letter, obtained by The Associated Press, said the league expects new conference-only schedules for all fall sports to be released in August. "Consistent with our collective need to be adaptable to changes in circumstances and evolving medical knowledge, even issuing a schedule does not guarantee that competition will occur".

With Aug. 17 as the common starting point, teams will have 40 days before the season begins.

"If schools can't start then, if they can't get a safe on-ramp for the start of the season, like everything with this, we'll reevaluate along the way", Scott said. Allowing specifically USC and UCLA, two Pac-12 cornerstones, to begin August 17 doesn't seem feasible at the moment.
