Next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class technical highlights revealed

Aside from the state-of-the-art MBUX infotainment system and an innovative heads-up display (we reported), the impending 7th-gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class is getting the company's signature suspension design called E-Active Body Control.

The new S-Class is the first vehicle with rear-facing back seat airbags, which sit in the front seats.

The new Mercedes S-Class is set to be unveiled in September, and arrive in the United Kingdom at the start of 2021. "These customers seek attractive and practical compact vehicles - and it is precisely these demands which the new T-Class fulfils", says Marcus Breitschwerdt, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans.

"With the T-Class's new layout and design we achieve a fusion of functionality and desirability", said Daimler Group chief design officer Gorden Wagener. "With our unique design philosophy of Sensual Purity we create an attractive family companion being the T-Class inspiring with its design, proportions and its perceived value".

In a clever marketing play and mirroring the model range of the brand's passenger vehicles, the T-Class will be smaller both physically and in price than the V-Class mini-bus when it hits European showrooms in 2022. The letter T stands for efficient room concepts and is thus perfectly suited as a model designation for compact family vans bearing the three-pointed star. Two sliding doors, one at each side, will allow "easy and comfortable access to the interior".

The Mercedes CLE will also most probably be built on Mercedes' MRA platform and can be configured with either an all-wheel or rear-wheel drive.

No details have been given on its powertrain yet although Mercedes has confirmed that an all-electric version will be offered. In August a year ago, the Vans division announced a successor to the compact urban delivery van, together with a fully-electric variant. Developed in partnership with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, the new T-Class will share its underpinnings with the next-gen Renault Kangoo.

Currently, the Citan is the German manufacturer's entry in the small van segment, though this has been aimed at commercial users, whereas the upcoming T-Class will be for private owners, albeit also with transport sharing services in mind.
