American Athletic Conference announces plan for the upcoming fall sports season

Why Group of 5 leagues aren’t switching to conference-only schedules yet

The AAC has a plan and a timeline for fall sports, the league announced Wednesday. Temple football was previously scheduled to play the University of Miami on September 5 and the University of Idaho on September 12.

The 12 schools in the American Conference, which includes the University of Tulsa, will play a regular conference season in football, men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball, men's cross country and women's cross country. The Golden Hurricane will have back-to-back Friday evening games in weeks eight and nine.

"Non-conference games may be played at the discretion of the individual schools, with the understanding that the opponents will strictly adhere to protocols and standards for testing, pregame, in-game and postgame operations set by The American's Medical Advisory Group", the conference said. American members can play up to four non-conference games, although some of the contests have already been canceled due to decisions by other leagues.

Health and safety protocols developed by the Medical Advisory Group will be announced at a later date, and the conference will continue to "meet regularly regarding protocols for the safe return of fall competition".

The American Athletic Conference is planning to allow its teams to play a full football season amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Sun Belt also announced an eight-game league schedule plus up to four nonconference games. Similar to men's soccer, the No. 1 seed will host the tournament.

For the volleyball program, there will be a two-division format in which they will play the opponents in the same division twice at the same site. USF will be in The East along with UCF, Cincinnati, East Carolina and Temple. The West will consist of Houston, Memphis, SMU, Tulane and Wichita State. League games are available to be scheduled between Thursday and Sunday. "The nonconference games mean something to us". The top two teams from each division will play in the championship. Currently, the AAC Cross Country Championships are set for October 31 at Mile Creek in Augusta, Kansas.

Cross country will start their regular season on or after Sept 1. However, their scheduled start date will be different for each sport, according to the same release.
