Google has banned 11 apps from Play Store for containing hidden malware

Earlier in March this year Google had pulled down not just the main Ant Tutu app but also the Antutu 3DBench and AItutu Benchmark apps from the Google Play Store as well

Google Play is also responsible for updating critical applications and services, such as authentication, push notifications, and Google Play Protect. The malware had been hiding from security checks by hiding in apps that seemed legitimate. Non-gaming apps accounted for 35% of consumer spend on iOS and 15% on Google Play, largely due to in-app subscriptions.

On a category level, games, tools and entertainment were the largest by downloads for Google Play while on the Apple iOS platform, video and entertainment remained among the largest category by downloads for the fourth straight quarter.

The Joker malware, also known as Bread, has been active since at least 2017, although it has become more prevalent over the a year ago.

Consumer spend on iOS grew 15% year over year to $17 billion in Q2 2020, and 25% year over year on Google Play to $10 billion. Check Point that deals with security solutions has said that the Joker Malware was found in all these apps that have been taken down by Google from the Play Store. These were then used to register the victimized user for the unwanted premium services, according to the report.

"In an attempt to minimize Joker's fingerprint, the actors behind it hid the dynamically loaded DEX file from sight while still ensuring it is able to load - a technique which is well-known to developers of malware for Windows PCs", the researchers note in their analysis.

"As the Play Store has introduced new policies and Google Play Protect has scaled defences, Bread apps were forced to continually iterate to search for gaps". Then, the Play Store will update itself automatically as it usually should.

Alternatively, you can download and install an apk for Google Play, but if you choose to do so, make sure that you download it from safe, trustworthy sources. As a result, it saw a further 1.5 times increase in the adoption of Android 10.
