Courteney Cox Will Reprise Her Role As Gale Weathers In 'Scream 5'

Courtney Cox Returning For Scream Reboot

Courteney Cox took to Instagram to share the exciting news-she's officially signed on to reprise her role in the upcoming fifth installment of the Scream franchise.

Cox has played the determined and self-serving TV reporter Gale Weathers ever since Wes Craven's original Scream reinvented the slasher genre in 1996 with its meta-analysis of slasher tropes. As much as it will help having Dewey and Gale in the sequel, it still wouldn't feel right without having Sidney there in one way or another, so let's hope that will be the next Scream 5 casting announcement made.

"Ready or Not" directors Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are helming the reboot from a script by James Vanderbilt ("Murder Mystery", "Zodiac", "The Amazing Spider-Man") and Guy Busick ("Ready or Not").

In a statement, the Radio Silence filmmaking group said, "We can't imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney". They previously directed the critically acclaimed horror film Ready or Not. Jamie and Guy's wonderful script does that legacy justice and we're so excited to bring the next chapter of Scream to life.

Williamson and Chad Villella are executive producing with Project X Entertainment's Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak serving as producers.

This entry will be the first film since 2011's Scream 4 and the first new addition to the beloved tongue-in-cheek horror franchise since the MTV/VH1 Scream series' third season ended last July. With something good enough to lure back Neve Campbell, of course.
