Amazon Prime Video rolls out online social viewing tool 'Watch Party'

The Windows 10 Amazon Prime Video app is now available to download and use

"Watch Parties are available on desktop browsers, except Apple's Safari".

Similar to Netflix Party, Amazon is adding its own version of social viewing, which allows up to 100 Amazon Prime Video users to watch films or TV shows at the same time. There is a beta version available for you to try out today, however, the attribute is now available on desktop and also to US customers. Users located in the USA can simply tap on the "Watch Party" button that will appear under the title of the show or the movie to start a watch party with other Prime Video users (also located in the US).

One viewer has to act as "host", controlling the playback for the others.

Supplying you to qualify for the attribute and it's hit on your accounts, you can Begin a Watch Party with tens of thousands of names in your Prime Video SVOD catalog, such as Amazon Originals including Fleabag, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, HANNA, The Boys, The Expanse, along with Homecoming, in Addition to licensed content such as Cabinets Out, Captain America: The First Avenger, Hell's Kitchen, along with SpongeBob SquarePants.

There are a few limitations to the feature. All of them need to have a Prime subscription and location within the U.S. during the Party. Watch Party will also have a chat feature in a column to the right of the video, for participants' running commentary. It may not be a big deal to many Prime members, but it may be a bummer for those used to watching on a more cinematic display. As people have been stuck at home the desire to watch films and TV shows with friends have been high. Again, this makes sense, but it's an important distinction to note.

With the on-going pandemic, streaming services have doubled down on making it easy to watch with friends and family near and far. The entire series of Cheers is on Hulu, by the way.

Titles obtainable just for lease or buy will not be obtainable inside Watch Get together presently, Amazon says.

The app is completely free to download though an Amazon Prime subscription is naturally needed to view premium content.

Hulu is also now testing a similar feature on for its Hulu (No Ads) subscribers.
