Protests in the United States have continued following the death of George Floyd and people want to know what the Antifa movement is.

Soon after Floyd's death in police custody last May 25, the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul erupted in massive protests which later on spread all across the country.

Taking part in the protests is the Antifa movement which has been here for some time.

Antifa activists have grown in visibility since Trump won the election in 2016, but terrorism experts responded to his Sunday announcement by saying the decentralized movement is not an organization with defined leadership.

Despite threats by the President to designate various groups as terrorists, the closest the Trump administration has come is, in recent weeks, the State Department's designation of a white supremacist group called Russian Imperial Movement, which is a foreign group but has some domestic U.S. supporters, as a specially designated global terrorist group.

There is no hierarchical structure to antifa or universal set of tactics that makes its presence immediately recognisable, though members tend to espouse revolutionary and anti-authoritarian views, said Mark Bray, a historian at Rutgers University and author of Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook.

Those associated with Antifa aim to support women, as well as people from BAME and LGTBQ communities and prevent all forms of racism and sexism.

According to an Australian writer and anti-fascist researcher, Andy Fleming, it is hard to say if Antifa is really involved with the current protests in the US.

The BBC reports that early Antifa groups emerged in the 1920s and 1930s.

The election of Donald Trump in 2016 saw an increase in Antifa activity in the United States, as followers became increasingly convinced that fascism and other right-wing ideologies were making new inroads in American politics.

US President Donald Trump has announced that they will announce anti-racist leftist group Antifa, a terrorist organization, responsible for the escalation of tensions in the protests demanding justice for George Floyd, who was murdered by racist police.

His tweet has received huge controversy from social media users.

On Friday, Twitter accused some of Trump's tweets of violating the glorification of violence policy by calling the protesters in response to George Floyd's death "thugs" and appearing to threaten military intervention over the demonstrations that had turned violent.
