Reddit bans pro-Trump forum 'The Donald' in crackdown on hate speech

Twitch suspends Donald Trump's account as Reddit bans his supporters community

Reddit on Monday said it yanked a forum used by supporters of President Donald Trump as part of a crackdown on hateful posts at the popular online bulletin board while the game streaming platform Twitch briefly suspended the president.

Reddit Inc., a community-based social website, said it banned 2,000 discussion pages, including r/TheDonald and r/ChapoTrapHouse, for encouraging hate.

Twitch flagged and removed multiple pieces of content from the president as hateful - some of which is incredibly old, including a rebroadcast of Trump's kickoff rally, in which he infamously claimed that many illegal immigrants are the "worst" Mexico has to offer, like rapists.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "We banned r/The_Donald because it has not done so, despite every opportunity", said Chief Executive Steve Huffman in a post on the site. "Reddit's ban [of] a bunch of mostly irrelevant subreddits (apart from ChapoTrapHouse) is just cover to ban r/The_Donald, which was the largest pro-MAGA community on the Internet", tweeted YouTuber and Human Events Managing Editor Ian Miles Cheong.

"All communities on Reddit must abide by our content policy in good faith", Reddit said.

Under pressure as more than 90 brands halted their advertising on the platform, Facebook announced on Friday that it would institute stronger rules barring hate speech in ads and add warning labels to politicians' statements that break its rules.

Reddit clarified that it allows views across the political spectrum on Reddit, but said "all communities must work within our policies and do so in good faith, without exception".
