Trump says G7 meeting will 'probably' be at White House

Trump says he's

At the time, the White House said the summit would be held by video conference.

Still, Trump indicated he believed a summit held in the United States would signal to the world that things are returning to normal after a global pandemic shut down travel and froze the world economy.

"Now that our Country is "Transitioning back to Greatness", I am considering rescheduling the G-7, on the same or similar date, in Washington, D.C., at the legendary Camp David", he tweeted Wednesday.

Member countries - which remain under varying levels of lockdown and whose leaders have not left home since the pandemic began - were not notified that Trump had resurrected plans for a face-to-face summit until after he said Wednesday on Twitter that he was considering it.

President Donald Trump pumps his fist while boarding Air Force One as he departs Thursday, May 21, 2020, at Andrews Air Force Base, Md.

The spokesman for UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who has recovered from a serious bout of COVID-19 himself, said authorities were in "close contact" with the U.S. in the lead-up to the summit, adding they would also need to look at details of the proposals first.

French President Emmanuel Macron was the most positive, saying he was "willing to go to Camp David if the health conditions allow". World leader summits like the G7 typically involve hundreds of officials, support staff and elaborate security.

"No matter whether in the form of a video conference or otherwise, I will definitely fight for multi-lateralism", Mr Merkel said.

Donald Trump is contemplating whether to resurrect plans to host G7 leaders at the Camp David presidential retreat next month. "We'll certainly take a look at what the United States is proposing as host of the G7 to see what kind of measures will be in place to keep people safe, what kind of recommendations the experts are giving in terms of how that might function". "We're in close contact with the United States in the run-up to the summit".

"We'd like to see it happen sometime in June but as to a particular date I don't have any announcement", she said. Last October, the White House announced that the Trump National Doral Golf Club near Miami had been chosen out of 12 possible sites.

The United States now maintains bans on flights to the country from Europe and Britain. Restrictions are now in place for travellers from Europe, home to four of the G7 nations, and earlier this week the USA and Canada agreed to keep their shared border closed to non-essential travel until June 21.
