India reports 3,320 new COVID-19 cases 95 deaths in 24 hrs count reaches 59,662

According to the Union health ministry, 6,654 new infections were reported in the 24 hours since 8 am on Friday, taking the total tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases to more than 1.25 lakh.

Globally, 5,304,033 people have been infected by coronavirus so far, and the total number of casualties now stands at 340,003, according to Worldometer.

A noted public health expert and epidemiologist, however, cautioned that India may witness COVID-19 cases peaking in mid-July if the current lockdown is lifted this month-end, but also hoped that there could be a "lower surge" in the wake of strong containment measures taken in the past two months.

The national capital is at number fourth spot across the country in terms of infections.

States and UTs that have reported a significant number of corona cases are Kerala (732), Jharkhand (308), Chandigarh (218), Assam (259), Tripura (175), Chhattisgarh (172) and Uttarakhand (153) and Goa (54).

New cases dropped to zero in China on Saturday, though a re-emergence of the outbreak has been seen in various countries in recent weeks after lifting of their lockdowns.

"1,899 cases are being reassigned to states", the ministry said on its website adding: "Our figures are being reconciled with the ICMR". Only the US, Brazil and Russian Federation, the countries with the highest number of infections, have reported a higher average of new cases than India. The states are Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Karnataka.

A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan, however, refused to pass an order on a plea seeking to scrap the Death Audit Committee, constituted by the Delhi government.

- Karnataka has a total of 1,743 cases. At the Chennai Central railway station, 15 railway policemen tested positive for Covid-19 today.

However, India's tally of active cases at over 65,000 is now the fifth largest in the world after the US, Russia, Brazil and France. The two states have the highest number of cases in India. It put the number of active cases at 63,624 and recoveries at over 45,000.
