Arsenal defender, David Luiz’s new club revealed

Football Brazilian defender David Luiz could see his Arsenal stint cut short.

However, it turns out that his deal was for just one year, with the club retaining an option to extend for a further 12 months, though Sky Sports reported earlier this week that the North London outfit have no intention of activating that extension, leaving the defender free to leave on June 30th. The French club insisted the deal was dependent on him returning to France to continue his development. However, since Mikel Arteta took over, the defense has somehow stabilized but Keown believes his former club should have driven a harder bargain during their initial negotiation for Saliba.

"There's an terrible lot of work to be done in [the defence]", Keown told talkSPORT.

"I couldn't quite work that out because I'm told now he's coming in, he's world-class, [and] he was loaned back again".

The Gunners beat Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of the teenage centre-back last summer in a £27million deal (BBC Sport), but loaned him back to the Ligue 1 club for the entirety of the 2019-20 season as part of the deal.

"David Luiz concerns me because if you're going to pay £8m for him and pay £5m wages and he's only going to be there for one season, I'm not sure about the wisdom of that", Keown told talkSPORT, as quoted by Express.

"Is he a proper defender?" Can he play in a back four?

"Benfica doesn't deserve me to come back without helping".

"I think it's the most crucial area which [Arteta] has to get right".

Now, Liverpool FC defender Carragher has underlined his belief that Arsenal rate Saliba so highly that they may not be too upset about losing David Luiz this summer. But is he good enough or not?

"Do they now start to be really harsh and make those key decisions?"

"To be honest, it's no surprise they won't be renewing David Luiz's contract".
