Biden doubts Democratic convention can happen in July

The candidate said Wednesday night that the Democratic National Convention should be pushed back from July to August because of the coronavirus pandemic, the New York Times reports.

"In light of the unprecedented health crisis facing our country, the 2020 Democratic National Convention will now be held the week of August 17 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, providing our team more time to determine the most appropriate structure for this historic event", the Democratic National Convention Committee said in their announcement.

Biden, appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, said that he thought that the convention would have to be moved. But when the Olympics were delayed by a year due to the coronavirus, the three weeks spanning July and August were open for what Democrats hope will be a major media moment. The former vice-president has also released a response plan that calls for free testing and expanded emergency family leave, among other steps.

"I think the critics and the naysayers seem so much more small and so much more small and unhelpful and petty than they ever have", she said.

Biden made his offer after White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway publicly called on him to call the Executive Mansion and offer support to the President, the Fox news report said. "But the fact is it may have to be different".

Biden expressed the same concern to an MSNBC reporter earlier this week, arguing that officials should be able to conduct safe conventions and elections during the pandemic in the same way they did during times of war.

Biden is leading the delegate count in the Democratic primary for president.

Biden, who was vice president under President Barack Obama, now leads the Democratic nominating contest against his rival, Bernie Sanders, a USA senator from Vermont.
