Wimbledon may be postponed or cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic

Novak Djokovic will be hoping to defending his men's singles title this summer

One thing is certain: the club already has formally ruled out playing the tournament behind closed doors.

The PA news agency understands the option of moving back to occupy the slot now vacated by the postponed Olympics is not being pursued because the dates are too close to the current schedule.

"The AELTC has been contingency planning since January, working closely with the United Kingdom government and public health authorities to follow their advice and understand the likely impact of covid-19 and the government's emergency measures on The Championships, and our thoughts are with all those affected by this crisis at this time", the club said. The only most vital consideration is one in all public well being, and we're chose to behave responsibly by means of the selections we make.

Wimbledon is set to begin June 29 but the spread of the virus across the world and throughout Europe has sent all sporting events into a downward spiral.

The event will not be played behind closed doors and postponing the only Grand Slam grasscourt event until later in the year "is not without significant risk and difficulty", according to the AELTC.

Ahead of that meeting, the tournament organisers are keeping communications lines open with the WTA and ATP, the respective bodies for the elite women's and men's tours, which have suspended their tournaments through 7th June.

Wimbledon hasn't been canceled since World War II.

Wimbledon is insured if the championships are canceled, and though organizers are aware that staging the event on time might give the country a timely boost, in the final analysis, they will adhere to whatever the updated government advice is.

"The AELTC has been contingency planning since January, working closely with the United Kingdom government and public health authorities to follow their advice and understand the likely impact of COVID-19 and the government's emergency measures on The Championships, and our thoughts are with all those affected by this crisis at this time", a statement on the official website of Wimbledon said.

An emergency situation conference of the AELTC board is arranged for following week, and also to prepare they are connecting carefully with the LTA, and also with the ATP, WTA, ITF and also the various other Grand Slams.
