Weather alerts issued for Upstate NY for snow, freezing rain

More snow freezing rain in Syracuse

It will be another cold night tonight lasting into Friday morning but lows will only fall into the single digits above zero with a much lighter wind tonight. Those are little Alberta clippers that came down from Canada and dropped a little bit of snow on their way.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY begins at 1 p.m. this afternoon as a wintry mix takes hold across the state with rain, snow, and some pockets of sleet.

"1-3" of accumulation is possible in valleys while closer to 2-5" in possible in mountains.

Wind Chill Advisories will also be in effect in adjoining central and northwest IL and Wisconsin. The core of this arctic air will be felt that night with lows below zero and wind chills as cold as the minus teens in spots by Friday morning. This bitter cold has prompted some districts to call off school for the day.

Snowfall amounts are expected be light. South of I-70, accumulation amounts will be less than an inch.

There will be a wintry mix at times into the early overnight hours north of I-287 in NY and the Merritt Parkway in CT, where the overnight low will hover around the freezing mark. Southeast winds 5 to 10 miles per hour. Looking ahead, Barlow said the weekend will see the return of temperatures in the 30s and a slight chance of snow is possible Saturday morning.
