Trump tells Geraldo he sent Giuliani to Ukraine, 'not' sorry for it

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch speaks Wednesday at Georgetown University where she received the Trainor Award for excellence in diplomacy

Much of her remarks referred obliquely to the challenges State Department professionals now face, from reduced staffs and budgets, low morale, and accusations by the Trump administration that many government professionals are part of the president has called the "deep state" working against his administration.

"Rudy has other clients other than me", Trump said.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani on Thursday rotated a wild brand-new conspiracy theory including a "bunch of Democrats" and also Ukraine- and also claimed they intend to "literally" kill him over it.

Giuliani had always maintained that in seeking information on Biden - and in seeking for Ukraine to investigate him - he was simply fulfilling his duties as Trump's defense attorney.

In his interview with Rivera, Trump maintained his decision to "use" Giuliani, even though U.S. diplomats previously testified that Giuliani had undermined long-standing U.S. policy toward Ukraine.

Marie Yovanovitch was expected to accept the Trainor Award from the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University in a ceremony Wednesday, making her first public appearance since testifying before Congress in the impeachment proceedings.

Trump past year disparaged Yovanovitch in a telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky which was the center of his impeachment for abuse of power.

The Ukraine allegations that Giuliani is providing to the Justice Department are being vetted by investigators in the US Attorney's Office in Pittsburgh, two US law enforcement officials told CNN on Tuesday.

Bill Taylor who took over the role of top diplomat in Ukraine when she was recalled and also served as a key impeachment witness was also in the audience.

Building worldwide relationships through diplomacy is one of the most valuable techniques for conducting foreign policy, Yovanovitch said.

"We need to re-empower our diplomats to do their job".

"It sounds so old-fashioned in our high-tech world, but diplomacy is about human interaction, and creating relationships of trust is more important than ever", she said. "It's not as exciting as sending in the marines, but it's cheaper and usually more effective".

Yovanovitch was the ambassador to Ukraine for three years before her removal. At the time, the president's conduct in Ukraine was at the height of its scrutiny as the House carried out its impeachment inquiry.

"This was never easy, and now in this particularly tense and fraught time of a clear schism in the American political life, she made the choice of her oath", Pickering said.

Previous recipients include Madeleine Albright and Kofi Annan.

"What I found over this fall was that at a certain point, it is harder to do the wrong thing than the right thing", she said.

"At a hard moment in our country's history, Ambassador Yovanovitch was called upon to speak the truth".

"I have our intelligence service are not credible".
