Trump submits $4.8tn budget proposal despite no chance of it passing

Like all of the previous budget ideas, Politico says the bulk of Trump's fiscal 2021 spending plans are heading straight for the congressional paper shredder.

To Donald Trump, every event on the presidential stage is now a re-election pitch to voters.

However, Trump's budget proposal calls for an increase to the Homeland Security funding and $2 billion in additional funding for his border wall, down from $5 billion a year ago. It includes billions more for defense and a mission to Mars alongside deep proposed cuts to foreign aid and environmental protection and new restrictions on social welfare programs.

"Once again, the President is showing just how little he values the good health, financial security and well-being of hard-working American families", the Democratic leader said in a statement.

The Commerce Department, whose responsibilities include collecting census data, monitoring the weather and issuing patents, would suffer the biggest budget cut, at 37% - though much of the fall is explained by the loss of additional funds allocated to administer the 2020 census. Reforms to medical liability and how hospitals are paid for uninsured care are also proposed though spending on such programs is still projected to rise over a decade.

Budget Chairman John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) only alluded to the aid freeze in the last question asked of Vought, about the steps OMB is taking to ensure the agency does not withhold "duly enacted appropriations". And it uses the deficit-which Trump has increased through tax cuts for the wealthy and an unnecessary increase to the bloated Pentagon budget-as an excuse to slash programs for the most vulnerable people in America.

Trump proposed spending $1.6 trillion less on future health care spending, including $451 billion less for Medicare.

Tricia Neuman, a policy expert at the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation, said the administration is right that the plan cuts the growth in Medicare spending without actually cutting benefits for current enrollees.

The budget is an election-year embodiment of numerous policy priorities Trump has championed over his first three years in office.

The White House claimed that solid economic growth would support substantial deficit reduction and lead to a balanced budget by 2035.

Pelosi said the president's plan slashes half a trillion USA dollars from Medicare, takes 900 billion dollars from the lifeline of Medicaid, and cuts social security disability insurance.

After rounding out the hottest decade on record, the federal government continues to operate in complete denial of the climate crisis.

The pay announcement came out on Monday, the same day officials from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released the proposed budget for fiscal 2021.

What those figures mask is that most the DOE's total budget doesn't go towards energy-related spending at all. At a time when 45 million Americans hold a collective $1.6 trillion in student debt, the Trump Budget cuts $170 billion from college affordability programs. "This weak, pathetic requests for eight ships - of which two are tugboats - is not only fewer ships than 2020, but fewer ships than the Navy told us past year it planned for in 2021".
