Senate invokes War Powers Act to restrain Trump's military moves in Iran

Collins Says It's Time for Pelosi to Get Over Impeachment

Trump's moves to expand the powers of the presidency in the wake of the impeachment debacle make clear that that the Trump administration and its drive toward dictatorship can not be opposed through the Democratic Party.

President Donald Trump was fascinated by badgers and derailed several key briefings and policy discussion sessions with questions about the small omnivores, according to a new book detailing behind-the-scenes White House conversations.

Even if the Senate can not override a veto, Kaine said the resolution's backers hoped it would influence Trump when it came to future military action, adding that the president cared about what the public thinks, if not the Senate. 'If my hands were tied, Iran would have a field day. As presidents have grown increasingly imperial, the Senate has too frequently abandoned its checking and balancing role, and, since Donald Trump took office, the vast majority of Republican senators have served as this particular president's Praetorian Guard.

Trump then railed against Vindman for saying "terrible things" about his now-infamous July call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his impeachment inquiry testimony. "And one can only surmise that the president therefore has something to hide from his own staff and bureaucracy". "With Congress's continued leadership, backed by an organized and activated grass roots", she says, "we can be the necessary counterweight to Trump's pro-war foreign policy".

The tally of the War Powers Resolution was 55-45.

"Is anybody dumb enough to believe that I would say something inappropriate with a foreign leader while on such a potentially "heavily populated" call", Trump tweeted out in September of a year ago.

It now appears that won't happen, but the larger point remains the same: the president isn't letting go of his vengeance campaign against a decorated war hero who dared to tell the truth.

Larry Pfeiffer, a 30-year USA intelligence veteran who managed the Situation Room during the Obama years, said his predecessor told him that the White House had stopped taping presidential calls in the 1970s after Nixon recorded 3,700 hours of conversations.

The House voted almost along party lines on January 9, passing a non-binding resolution similar to Kaine's legislation by a 224-194 vote.

While the majority of Republicans opposed the measure, there was a growing number of support to limit Trump's military authority when it comes to Iran. 'And as part of that we want to make sure that any military action that needs to be authorized is in fact properly authorized by Congress. He was also critical of Trump's performance during the State of the Union last week. He's happy he's survived the Senate impeachment trial and Robert Mueller investigation before that, but he's "still pissed that he went through this for three years, that his kids went through this for three years", a White House official says.

On Thursday, the President will deliver remarks at the Hope for Prisoners Graduation Ceremony at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Headquarters, where he will discuss his Administration's efforts to provide previously-incarcerated Americans with second chances. "An offensive war requires a congressional debate and vote".
