NASA spots massive asteroid approaching Earth on February 15

Potentially hazardous asteroid approaching earth NASA

If such a space rock hits the earth, it will wipe out millions within a fraction of a second before they could know what had actually happened. The asteroid is likely to come near the approachable range from the Earth around 11 am GMT on February 15.

The asteroid is so massive, that if a collision were to occur, the impact would kill off millions of human inhabitants and lead to a mass extinction of animals, and possibly a global nuclear winter that could last for years.

Researchers have discovered most of the asteroids that are about a kilometers in size, but are now on the hunt for those that are about 140m - as they could cause catastrophic damage.

"In this case, the impact debris would spread throughout the Earth's atmosphere so that plant life would suffer from acid rain, partial blocking of sunlight, and from the firestorms resulting from heated impact debris raining back down upon the Earth's surface". The report quoted NASA saying it is bigger than the largest man-made structure in the world.

Though asteroid 2020 BX12 is considered a "potentially hazardous" near-Earth object (NEO) because of its size and minimum orbit intersection distance of 188,000 miles from Earth, it "poses no danger at this time and is now receding from Earth", Arecibo added. Due to its size and unsafe orbit, the space rock has been labelled as a potentially hazardous asteroid. NASA tracked down an asteroid that could potentially bring disastrous effects on the planet if it collided. CNEOS has identified 2002 PZ39 as an Apollo asteroid.

Asteroid alert: Will the colossal space rock hit the planet or will it miss?

According to the Express UK, the asteroid is moving towards the earth at a very high speed-at 57,240 km per hour.

However, NASA has said the risk of dying from an asteroid impact in the foreseeable future is very slim.

"Over long periods of time, however, the chances of the Earth being impacted are not negligible so that some form of NEO insurance is warranted". The asteroid known as 2020 CH flew by the other day.

"The asteroid will pass over Earth from a distance of 0.03860 astronomical unit or around 3.6 million miles (5793638.4km)", it said.
