Justice Dept. Declines to Charge Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe

Ex-FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe won't be charged for role in leaks to media

And while the DOJ did decide not to prosecute McCabe, a favorite target of Trump's, news broke on Friday that the attorney general took the extraordinary step of appointing an outside U.S. Attorney to review Flynn's guilty plea and interview the FBI investigators to probe for misconduct.

He also called the Trump administration's investigation an "absolute disgrace" and chided the U.S. Attorney's Office for the two years it took them to reach an "obvious conclusion".

President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr walk out of the Oval Office to announce an executive action to tally American citizenship, in the White House Rose Garden in Washington, on July 11, 2019. During his time at the FBI, McCabe also authorized an investigation into Trump in connection with his presidential campaign's alleged collaboration with Russian Federation to spy on Hillary Clinton's camp.

This announcement comes after former Trump Advisor Roger Stone's prosecutors recommended a lengthy, 7-to-9-year prison sentence for a similar crime.

The news of Barr's decision to tap an outside prosecutor on the Flynn case caps an extraordinary week at the Justice Department.

McCabe infamously authorized the FBI's highly controversial counterintelligence investigation into Trump after the latter unceremoniously fired then-FBI director James Comey shortly after taking office.

"At long last, justice has been done in this matter", the lawyers said in a statement, according to the Associated Press.

Barr on Thursday tried to beat back critics' concerns that he was doing the president's political bidding by intervening to help Stone, and said the president's constant tweets on criminal cases were undercutting his ability to do his job.

McCabe, a frequent target of Trump's attacks, has denied that he intentionally misled anyone.

McCabe filed a civil suit against the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in August, arguing his firing was unjust and politically motivated.

The investigation by the USA attorney's office in Washington arose from an October 2016 story in The Wall Street Journal that described internal debates roiling the FBI and the Justice Department weeks before the presidential election about how aggressively the Clinton Foundation should be investigated.

A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment.

It is likely to further agitate Trump, who has repeatedly and loudly complained that the Justice Department has pursued his former aides and advisers but not prosecuted his perceived political foes. No charges are expected to be filed against McCabe.

McCabe oversaw the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails and the Clinton Foundation after his wife already lost her race, and the 2016 leak was seen as damaging - not helpful - to Clinton's campaign. The article recounted a particularly tense phone call between McCabe and a senior Justice Department official. The investigation, he said, raised "questions about the legitimacy of his presence in the White House". One of the interviews took place the same day that Comey was sacked.

"I'm not disappointed that the President is angry today about this outcome", McCabe said. "And when I thought my answers were misunderstood, I contacted investigators to correct them".
