Delta Announces $1 Billion Program To Become Carbon Neutral

Delta Air Lines

In a release on Friday, Delta Air Lines said it has committed $1 billion ($1.3 billion CAD) over the next decade "on its journey to mitigate all emissions from its global business going forward".

"There's no challenge we face that is in greater need of innovation than environmental sustainability, and we know there is no single solution", Bastian said in a statement.

The airline did not provide details on how it will invest the money, but it will likely use some of it on carbon-offset programs that funnel funds into environmental projects to help counteract plane emissions.

As a whole, the airline industry accounts for about 2 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions.

Even if some kind of carbon-free airplane existed, it would take much more than $1 billion to replace Delta's fleet with electric aircraft.

Delta plans to reduce its carbon footprint through company-wide efforts that will limit its usage of jet fuel.

In the report, Bastian said 2019 "was a truly outstanding year on all fronts - the best in Delta's history operationally, financially and for our customers".

The move comes amid increasing concern among consumers about the global impact of burning jet fuel for travel, as well as the in-flight use of single-use plastics.

Innovation - Investigate, enable and advance new projects, innovative technologies and operational efficiencies to substantially reduce and mitigate emissions and our overall environmental footprint.

A cleaner environment is one thing, but you may be asking yourself what's in it for you the next time you climb aboard a Delta flight?

Evolution - Be nimble in evolving and adjusting in response to the latest scientific findings and technological developments.

The deal with Gevo complemented the airline's $2 million investment in Northwest Advanced Bio-fuels LLC for the feasibility study of a facility to produce sustainable aviation fuel and other biofuel products in Washington State.

Delta was the No. 1 airline named among America's Most Sustainable Companies by Barron's in 2020, and has been awarded the Vision for America Award by Keep America Beautiful and the Captain Planet Foundation's Superhero Corporate Award. The love will be spread out among 90,000 Delta employees, who will each receive an extra two months of pay.
