National Football League teams with new looks for 2020

Art Rooney NFL

Decades ago, playoff experience in general, and deep playoff experience in particular, was the gold standard in filling head-coaching vacancies - so much so that when the Bengals hired 32-year-old David Shula (son of two-time Super Bowl champion Don Shula - but still), people laughed - and their laughter proved justified when Shula was sacked midway through the 1996 season after a 19-52 stint whose best finish was 7-9 in 1995. Rudolph endured what Rooney described as an "unusual" season that included being knocked unconscious against Baltimore;getting into a fight with Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett that ended with Garrett ripping of Rudolph's helmet, then smacking him in the head with it; and hurting his left shoulder in Week 16 against the New York Jets. Hopefully, the old story, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, hopefully it was that kind of situation.

"We continue to raise our hands and say that we are interested in playing a game in Mexico", said Rooney.

To help speed up the process, the Steelers hired Matt Canada as quarterbacks coach on Wednesday.

That number is down to three, the same number as when the Rooney Rule was created in 2003. Like Mike Tomlin, whom Rooney thought did a good job in 2019 holding things together, the Steelers owner said he was pleased with the progress made by Rudolph, who started eight games and appeared in two others. And the Giants hired Patriots wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator Joe Judge. Ray Sherman came out of retirement to coach the position following Darryl Drake's sudden passing during training camp, but Rooney deferred any movement there to Tomlin. New provisions added included requiring teams to interview at least one diverse candidate from the league's Career Development Advisory Panel list or a diverse candidate not now employed by the club.

Yet losing Le'Veon Bell partway through two consecutive years of franchise tags hasn't scarred the Steelers front office.

The last time the team applied the franchise tag, things got weird. Rooney isn't concerned about history repeating itself.

Steelers picked up injured linebacker Ryan ShazierHe has signed a contract in each of the past two seasons, knowing that he would never play a low for them in those years.

"We would love to find Ryan to some extent", said Rooney.

"James (Conner) unfortunately had bad luck this year in terms of injuries", said Rooney, "but when he has been healthy, he has been a very productive player for us".

"I think any offensive coordinator in the league that winds up with three different starting quarterbacks over the course of the season is going to tell you it was going to be a challenge".

However, if the team places him on the payroll in another capacity, it means that his days of play, at least with the Steelers, are over. He's here every day to train. I think it was an experience for him. "I don't want to speak for him in terms of destination".
