United Nations climate change conference COP25 opens with focus on challenges

Final preparations are put on the COP25 venue

A key objective of COP25 is to take the next crucial steps in the United Nations climate change process as the global climate emergency intensifies and greenhouse gas emissions continue to grow. It will be held on December 2-13.

This 25th annual global summit on climate change has had a rocky start; last year, initial host country Brazil withdrew its offer to host the conference, then replacement host country Chile did the same in October of this year. She later continued to do this every Friday. This will include the 15th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol and the 2nd session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement.

"It would take a radical transformation, but it starts on the streets, it starts here", the 22-year-old said. The blue zone will also host events and activities run by NGO actors and side events organised by participating countries.

The Paris process faces a moment of truth next year when governments are due to unveil more ambitious proposals to cut the production of planet-warming gases in time to stop the climate careering past unsafe tipping points.

While a fast-growing youth-led climate activist movement is pressuring leaders to act, U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to begin withdrawing from the accord last month has cast a shadow over the latest round of negotiations.

This is putting the Earth on course to experience a temperature rise of 3.2 degrees Celsius by the end of this century, rather than the 1.5 degree goal set in the Paris Agreement. The adoption of such system would either move forward the Paris climate accord implementation or jeopardise the achievement of its goals in case of a weak deal.

He added that some 70 countries have already announced their intention to propose more ambitious national contributions to tackle climate change by 2020. Delegates from nearly 200 countries have begun a two-week worldwide climate conference in Madrid that seeks to step-up efforts to stop global warming.

A special announcement is expected from the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), formed by governments of nations threatened by climate change, and highlighting a new financing mechanism to enhance cooperation between these countries, as well as efforts to address the increasing impact of climate change on human rights.

Mr Trump said complying with the accord would hurt the U.S. economy, restricting domestic producers while other big polluters such as China increase emissions. Over 5,000 law enforcement officers are on duty to ensure security. The agreement aims to fight climate change by preventing the global temperature from rising more than 2 degrees celcius obove pre-industrial levels.

The letter was prepared by AFL-CIO, the largest federation of unions in the United States, representing more than 12.5 million working people in the country.
