Towering Ronaldo header sends Juventus top

Cristiano Ronaldo unleashed his incredible prodigy and shut down his critics with a brilliant 8ft 5in header to hand Juventus a vital 2-1 win over tough Sampdoria on Wednesday night, December 18. "It was a really good goal also because it was the one that won the three points", said Ronaldo.

Gianluigi Buffon could not keep a clean sheet, but the veteran goalkeeper matched Paolo Maldini's all-time record of 647 Serie A appearances, and a 479th outing in the division for Juve meant he broke Alessandro Del Piero's top-flight mark for the Bianconeri.

"I had a problem with my knee which affected me for a month but now I feel very good", he said.

Ronaldo's leap was measured at 2.56 metres and he later said: "I didn't know that". Lazio are a very strong team, but we have confidence and I hope that Juventus can win, that's what we want.

"When they [Juventus] scored goals like this, we just have to admire them as two masterpieces".

Juventus are now three points clear above their close rivals Inter Milan who are second on the Serie A standing.

Ronaldo restored Juventus' lead in the 45th minute, rising majestically at the far post to power home another Alex Sandro cross, the Brazilian involved in a third goal of the half. "Ronaldo did something that you see in the National Basketball Association; he was up in the air for an hour and a half".

Sarri fielded the attacking trident of Ronaldo, Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain for the second game in a row, and his side needed 19 minutes to find the opener as Dybala struck a sublime volley into the bottom corner.

Alex Sandro was then at fault for the equaliser in the 35th when he twice gave the ball away leading to Caprari's goal.

The game ended on a sour note for Ranieri's side as Caprari caught Merih Demiral in the face with a flailing arm to earn a second yellow card.

Sassuolo moved six points off the relegation zone with a 2-0 win at fellow struggler Brescia. "I'm really happy with the result..."
