Sean Maloughney - G28 - Canucks @ Oilers - PART 1

In quick turnaround, Oilers look to avenge loss to Canucks

The Oilers remain atop the Pacific Division, but they have been a pedestrian club over the past few weeks, having posted a 4-4-1 record and seen their lead on the Arizona Coyotes reduced to one point. Connor McDavid and Alex Chiasson each had two helpers. The Canucks have also received decent goal play from both of their goalies Thatcher Demko is 5-4-1 with a goals against average of 2.92 on the season while the Canucks' other goalie Jacob Markstrom is 7-6-3 on the year with a 2.72 goals against average.

Back in October I spoke about how a strong October doesn't guarantee a trip to the playoffs and one need not look past the Canucks to see that is true.

"He's been a really good player, especially five on five for us", Tippett said of Kassian.

"There have been a couple of those games this year where it kind of slipped away in the third".

"It's frustrating", he said.

Edmonton has converted on 30.8 percent of its power play opportunities this season, a mark that places them in the top-5 among National Hockey League teams.

TOP PERFORMERS: Christopher Tanev leads the Canucks with a plus-three in 27 games played this season. After a flurry of chances by the Oilers, Pearson took the puck down the right wing and tried to centre a pass to J.T. Miller, but the puck went in off of Smith's pad.

"It was a great start and that helped set us the rest of the game and Marky (Markstrom) made unbelievable saves and kept us in it", said Horvat.

The Canucks tied it 1-1 at 15:34 of the first period when Boeser scored on a tap-in from atop the crease.

Archibald scored his first goal of the season in his 20th game at 9:09 of the first period to put the Oilers ahead 1-0.

Draisaitl scored a double on the power play at 15:34, scoring his 17th of the season on a McDavid pass.

"It was awesome to be back with Lou and Pears", said Horvat. The Canucks when they are rolling are a risky dynamic team, but when they make mistakes other teams can capitalize quickly.

It's been a rough season for Eriksson, who has been a healthy scratch for 12 games this year and when he's been in the lineup, he's been used sparingly, but he was excellent in his promotion up the lineup. "You're not going to win every game, but you want to make sure when you don't win, you bounce back".

"He hasn't complained once this year".

The Canucks outshot the Oilers 23-14 through 40 minutes and the teams were tied 2-all.

Pearson's first-period goal was the fifth shorthanded against the Oilers, tying them with Columbus and Calgary for the league high. But ultimately you give up five you can't win in this league.

"We knew it was going to take a full team effort tonight", said Head Coach Dave Tippett. We'll have to play a little tighter to the vest, defend a little better.

It's been a little while since I've talked about how good Ethan Bear is.
