Qualcomm's New Snapdragon Chips are Really Going Heavy on the Cameras

Xiaomi Oppo to use Qualcomm's newest mobile phone chips

Xiaomi's Mi 10 and an unnamed Oppo flagship will use the Snapdragon 865 in the first quarter of 2020, while Nokia (that is, HMD Global) will use the Snapdragon 765 for future hardware.

While Qualcomm did not reveal all details of the new chipsets, it did talk about them in brief.

The other newly-announced Snapdragon platform is the Snapdragon 765/765G.

For Qualcomm, the launch of the Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform and Snapdragon 765/765G will be welcome news for device manufacturers.

Instead, the chip will work alongside the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System.

Today is the first day of Qualcomm's big Snapdragon Tech Summit and the news is already rolling in.

And that's all we know!

Qualcomm outlined two 5G Snapdragon mobile platforms as it plans to enable a mass rollout of the wireless technology starting in 2020. Motorola will also use both Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 765 SoCs.

We have been seeing sporadic leaks about Qualcomm's successor to the Snapdragon 855 over the past few months.

One thing that is slightly surprising is that the 865 won't have an in-built 5G modem which many had thought would be included in this update.

All three chips are designed as a "global 5G solution", with support for multiple frequency bands that account for all the different ways 5G has been rolling out across the world. The chip will include features for artificial intelligence tasks such as identifying objects in photos stored on smartphones, as well as a modem for connecting to 5G networks, which are rolling out this year and next and are expected to be much faster than current 4G networks.

The 865 5G is the "premium" chip, based on the x55 modem, and offers support for Gigapixel camera speeds, which means 8K video at 30fps, 4K video with 64MP of resolution on each frame, and cameras that offer up to 200MP of resolution. "Our Snapdragon 5G mobile platforms announced today will continue to show leadership in the industry and deliver on the promise of scaling 5G in 2020".

Snapdragon 865 chipset will certainly come baked into nearly every flagship smartphone, including the Galaxy S11 series, in 2020. But what devices will feature the latest and greatest Snapdragon chip?
