Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Niagara

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the Toronto area Tuesday evening

A severe thunderstorm warning issued by Environment Canada for Toronto has ended.

"Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads", states the warning.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Guelph and surrounding areas.

Environment Canada's thunderstorm watch notes that the storm has the potential to bring local damaging winds, torrential downpours, frequent lightning and hail.

The national weather agency expects scattered thunderstorms to develop ahead of a cold front near Lake Huron and Georgian Bay by Tuesday afternoon.

Environment Canada also said "strong to severe" thunderstorms were apparently moving eastward across southern Ontario on Wednesday afternoon and early evening. An isolated tornado or two can not be ruled out, especially on the Iowa side of the river. "Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!"

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
