Nobel week continues with the Chemistry Prize

Scientists James Peebles, Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz won the 2019 Nobel Prize for Physics for ground-breaking work in astronomy, the award-giving body said on Tuesday.

Mayor, who's an astrophysicist, and Queloz, an astronomer who's furthermore on the University of Cambridge in Britain, will part the somewhat a whole lot of half.

"James Peebles took on the cosmos, with its billions of galaxies and galaxy clusters", said the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The prize will be shared between James Peebles, who studied the origins of the universe, and Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz, who together first discovered a planet beyond our solar system. "Their discoveries have forever changed our conceptions of the world", the secretary-general of the academy, Goran Hansson, said.

That's just what we'd expect from someone who has spent half a century thinking about the structure of the universe.

"Much of it will go to charity", Peebles told colleagues at a Princeton news conference. We don't know what form of perform, ' Mayor mentioned on Tuesday as he arrived in Madrid for a scientific speaking engagement. "With numerous projects planned to start searching for exoplanets, we may eventually find an answer to the eternal question of whether other life is out there", noted the press release. Only three women have been awarded it so far: Marie Curie in 1903, Maria Goeppert-Mayer in 1963 and Donna Strickland in 2018, according to the Nobel website.

Astronomerhave found thousands of exoplanets since this trio effectively launched the field. Eisgruber also spoke about his time as Peebles's student while he was an undergraduate at the University.

"I think I've met or known all the great living theoretical cosmologists, and he stands out", says Lyman Page, a physics professor with an office next to Peebles' at Princeton. His research led to the revelation that just 5% of the universe is normal matter and energy, while about 95% is invisible stuff that physicists call dark matter and dark energy.

'I might barely breathe, ' Queloz mentioned.

And in a case of life imitating art, Tuesday's Nobel Prize announcement included the opening lyrics of "The Big Bang Theory" theme song: "Our whole universe was in a hot, dense state, then almost 14 billion years ago, expansion started". Controversy stalks the Nobel prizes for peace and literature in a way it rarely does for science.

They will share a 9-million kronor ($918,000) cash award, a gold medal and a diploma.

The revamped panel at the Swedish Academy who will hand out the Nobel literature prizes Thursday Oct. 10, 2019, for both 2018 and 2019 would relish arguments about the winners, rather than intrigue about the #MeToo scandal that forced the institution to suspend the prize past year. But the comedy series' influence is far beyond just the small screen as it received an unexpected nod on Tuesday during this year's Nobel prize victor announcement.

On Friday the action moves to Norway where the Peace Prize is awarded, with bookies such as Ladbrokes backing Swedish teen climate activist Greta Thunberg.
