Germany gun attack: Two killed in Halle

Police gathers after a shooting in the eastern German city of Halle

Two people were killed and several injured in a shooting in eastern Germany, police told Euronews.

Several shots were fired and the suspected assailants then fled in a vehicle, police said in a tweet, and told residents of the city of 240,000 to stay in their homes or indoors.

They did not give any further information.

The shootings took place in the Paulus area.

Police later said one suspect had been arrested but urged people to remain careful.

Witnesses said that at least one of the suspects was wearing a military-style combat uniform and was armed with "multiple weapons", according to the Deutsche Welle public broadcaster. Bild reported that a hand grenade was also thrown onto a Jewish cemetery.

"We are urgently investigating and are asking people to stay in their homes", Halle police tweeted.

Halle main railway station was sealed off to all mainline train traffic after the gunfire in an attempt to stop the attacker fleeing.
