Former NFL Player Terrell Roberts Shot and Killed in His Grandmother's Backyard

Former Bengals cornerback Terrell Roberts was shot to death Wednesday while visiting his grandmother in Richmond, California, north of Oakland, his family told CBS San Francisco. Roberts subsequently went out to the back yard where officers found him.

Witnesses reported seeing Roberts stumble into the backyard after a "disturbance" in the garage, Melgoza said.

A message seeking additional comment from Richmond police was not immediately returned early Thursday.

Roberts was signed by the Bengals in May 2003 after going undrafted out of Oregon State. "Another one of my former teammates [was] shot and killed rest easy Terrell Roberts one of the strongest DBs to play the game rest easy my boy".

The 5-foot-10 Roberts saw most of his action in 2001 and 2002 for Oregon State.

Loved ones and friends are paying tribute to Roberts.

'I'm crushed to hear the news of the passing of my teammate and friend Terrell Roberts, ' Smith tweeted. 13 year old Olineman.

"Man am exhausted of waking up everyday to bad news another one of my former teammates what's shot and killed rest easy Terrell Roberts one of the strongest DBs to play the game rest easy my boy", added National Football League defensive end, Smith.

Roberts' family told KPIX 5 that he did not have any known enemies, and was not "mixed up in anything bad".
