National Basketball Association legend Michael Jordan has pledged $1 million toward recovery efforts in the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian ravaged the island nation.

Officials in the Bahamas are hoping that aid and unity will help the thousands who have been left without a home.

All the major cruise lines are involved in Hurricane relief efforts for the Bahamas but Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line which is a small cruise line based out of West Palm Beach, Florida really has stepped up in helping the residents of the Hurricane hit islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco.

Officials are planning to erect two "tent city" relief centers capable of housing about 4,000 people around hard-hit Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco Island, said John Michael-Clark, co-chairman of the Bahamas disaster relief and reconstruction committee.

People all over Nassau are still searching for friends and family they have not seen since the storm.

Jordan said in a statement Tuesday on Twitter through his spokeswoman Estee Portnoy that he's "devastated" at the destruction in the Bahamas, adding "my heart goes out to everyone who is suffering and to those who have lost loved ones".

"It made landfall with sustained winds of 185 miles per hour and gusts of 220 miles per hour, which ties it for the highest sustained wind landfall on record - the 1935 Labor Day hurricane", he said.

Meanwhile, Bahamian tourism officials said the best way to help rebuild the storm-wrecked islands is to visit them - noting that they consist of 700 islands over 100,000 square miles of water, most of it fine. "There were no lasting issues here, which is nice because most refugees have been coming here since the storm", he said. The relief agency is working from a list of necessities provided by the Bahamas' Public Hospitals Authority.

Smith said more than 5,000 people had evacuated to New Providence, the island where the capital Nassau is located, but that there had been a "significant reduction" in the number of people now asking to be relocated.

"We want to make sure that we completely understand the need before we show up", Samad said.
