See the Perseid Meteor Shower at Wildwood State Park

Stars Above: Moonlit meteors and Mercury mornings

The Perseid Meteor Shower is associated with the periodic comet Swift-Tuttle.

But do not worry if you can not find the shower's namesake radiant - the Perseids will fly in all directions.

The best viewing will be overnight Sunday into Monday and then again Monday into Tuesday, the space agency says.

Under flawless conditions, the Perseids can produce up to 80 or 100 bright meteor streaks an hour. Weather permitting, sky watchers will be able to see around 15 to 20 shooting stars per hour. Jupiter is also visible as the brightest light in the night sky, besides the Moon. This means the moon will seriously hamper viewing of this year's Perseid display; bright moonlight will flood the sky for nearly the entire night, playing havoc with any serious attempts to see meteors.

This year, however, your plans to see the meteor shower may be slightly ruined by the Moon.

As with all meteor showers, it's smart to carve out a chunk of time to kick back and watch the night sky. The full moon will drown out the fainter ones, leaving only the bright ones. By late August of that year, the comet reached as high as 2nd magnitude (as bright as the North Star, Polaris) and sported a 30 degree tail as it passed some 50 million miles (80 million km) from the Earth. Comet Swift-Tuttle has left a cloud of debris that follows it around the sun.

Well, it's not impossible to see them if you're in Detroit, but your best chance is to head out to the suburbs.

No matter where you live worldwide, the 2019 Perseid meteor shower will probably produce the greatest number of meteors on the mornings of August 11, 12 and 13. According to NASA, allow your eyes about 45 minutes to adjust to the dark.

"They are called Perseids since the radiant-the area of the sky where the meteors seem to originate-is located near the prominent constellation of Perseus the hero when at maximum activity", a statement from the AMS read.
