Potter enjoys dream Premier League debut as Brighton coach

Aaron Mooy in action for Huddersfield

SOCCEROOS midfielder Aaron Mooy has moved to English Premier League club Brighton from Huddersfield on a season-long loan.

Brighton went ahead in the 28th minute after pouncing on a weak headed clearance by Watford's Jose Holebas.

The Seagulls took the lead in the 29th minute when Abdoulaye Doucoure turned the ball into his own net before second-half goals from substitutes Florin Andone, with his first touch, and Neal Maupay on debut sealed the win.

Brighton defender Lewis Dunk then produced a fine through-ball from distance that Frenchman Maupay ran on to and converted from a hard angle with his left foot to seal the victory with 13 minutes left.

"We are delighted to welcome Aaron to the club", Potter told the club's website.

"We have a new manager and he has got his vision of football", Maupay said.

Brighton formed a new-look side with three at the back and a more attacking style of play, with Potter saying he wanted his team to be more aggressive defensively.

"I didn't expect that... it was an unbelievable match. We have time to analyse and improve, I want to focus on the next game".

"We were ideal, from the beginning to the end, and we have to enjoy the match".

Brighton host West Ham United in their next match, while Watford are at former manager Marco Silva's Everton.

Javi Gracia insists there are "no excuses" for Watford after their 3-0 defeat to Brighton.

The Nigerian rated low; only better than Hornets' goalkeeper Ben Foster, of all 27 players who got minutes on Saturday. "No excuses... we try to improve for the next one", the Spaniard added.

Up until the middle of this week, Watford's preparations for the new campaign had been somewhat of a slow burner with only Craig Dawson being brought in to strengthen the first-team squad. We need to do that.

"It's true the first two goals came from two individual mistakes".
