The internet spoke and MTV listened.

After a worldwide social media push urging MTV to honor Missy Elliott's music video artistry, the network has made a decision to honor the rapper with this year's Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

The Virginia rapper will join the ranks of fellow icons like Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Madonna, and last year's recipient, Jennifer Lopez, with the prestigious prize, which honors an artist's remarkable body of work.

"Missy's impact on the music landscape is indelible", Viacom's Head of Music and Music Talent Bruce Gillmer said in a statement.

The ceremony which airs live on MTV on August 26, will be Missy's first time performing live in over a decade. There have been a lot of years in which fans have been rooting for Missy to receive this award. She is a five-time Grammy victor and the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Missy is a five-time Grammy victor who has sold over 30 million records worldwide. "Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched".
