Health officials announce uptick in mosquito-borne virus that causes brain swelling

The state's Health Department distributed a circular last week about the discovery of the virus, called by the name Eastern equine encephalitis.

The insects have been found to carry a virus known as Eastern equine encephalitis, or EEE for short.

After the positive tests for EEE virus in the sentinel chickens in Orange Couty, the health department said "the risk of transmission to humans has increased", CNN reported.

Although infection is extremely rare (in the United States, an average of just seven human cases of Eastern equine encephalitis are reported annually) for those who are bitten by an infected mosquito, there are no specific treatment options. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mosquito repellents containing oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under the age of three years.

"It kills about a third of the individuals, and those that survive often have lifelong neurological problems", Giovinco explained. Their blood can show the presence of the diseases, but they don't suffer from the effects of the viruses. The CDC says people develop symptoms about 4 to 10 days after being bitten.

Health officials in the U.S. state of Florida have issued a warning about the discovery of a mosquito-borne virus which causes brain swelling and can be fatal. The symptoms include seizures, disorientation or even a coma.

If you have a summer vacation to Florida planned in the next few days, you'll want to take precautions to protect yourself from mosquitoes.

Health officials urged people to guard against mosquito bites by draining out-static water around their premises.

Officials say the best way to protect yourself from mosquitos and mosquito-borne illnesses is to wear long sleeves and trousers, use insect repellent, and get rid of any standing water at your house. Antibodies are proteins generated by the immune system for resisting foreign substances including viruses and bacteria.

It is an infection that causes brain swelling in humans and can lead to death.

Taking a Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) image of the brain will detect the scale of brain inflammation. Apparently, a mosquito is a carrier of several deadly diseases. For instance, the signs of EEE include the sudden onset of headache, high fever, chills, and vomiting.
