‘Detective Pikachu’ Narrowly Beats ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at International Box Office

Storming through the opening weekend, Detective Pikachu has earned $58 million in ticket sales, topping the previous record holder Lara Croft: Tomb Raider by $10 million, and becoming the best performing Video Game Adaptation movie on the opening weekend. However, Force Awakens mustered $90 million in its third weekend and was at $742 million at this point in its run, on its way to $936 million, a number that is likely out of reach in the North America for Endgame given the heavy summer competition (The Force Awakens took advantage of relatively weaker January competition). (2016's Warcraft is still the highest grossing video game film worldwide with US$433 million.) Detective Pikachu had a reported production budget of US$150 million.

The film stars Justice Smith as main character Tim Goodman and Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu. Detective Pikachu would be the top film at the worldwide weekend box office, if the actual totals reported on Monday match these estimates. Letterman directed the film, with a script by Nicole Perlman and Letterman.

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios' grand conclusion to twenty-two films, "Avengers: Endgame". The box office juggernaut has amassed a monster $1.7 billion overseas, ranking just behind "Avatar" ($2.02 billion) on global box office charts. It's still the second-biggest film ever globally with $2.48 billion, pacing behind just Avatar with $2.78 billion. The blockbuster is the highest-grossing film in a number of markets, including Brazil, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand.

"The Hustle", a female-fronted spin on "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" with Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson, landed in third with $13.6 million despite lackluster reviews. It debuted in North America with $13.5 million for a worldwide start of $27.2 million. Top territories include Russian Federation with $2.4 million, Germany with $1.8 million, and Australia with $1.8 million.
