Engel's friend, John Quilty, told The New York Times the cause was undetermined because her Christian Scientist faith kept her from seeing a doctor. She starred in an off-Broadway production of Uncle Vanya in 2012.

Georgia Engel, who played the soft-spoken and innocent Georgette Franklin on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and Pat McDougall on "Everybody Loves Raymond", has died.

Actress Valerie Bertinelli paid tribute to her Hot In Cleveland co-star on Twitter, writing: "Georgia Engel was the sweetest, kindest, dearest woman".

Engel's other acting credits included film appearances in Dr Dolittle 2, The Sweetest Thing and TV shows such as The Office and Two And A Half Men.

Engel could be as upbeat as the fictional Georgette, as was demonstrated during a panel discussion previous year promoting the 2018 PBS special, Betty White: First Lady of Television.

Everybody Loves Raymond star Georgia Engel has died at the age of 70, The New York Times has revealed.

She landed a guest role on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", but soon captured the hearts of both the audience and her fellow cast members and continued to appear on the show as the girlfriend - and later wife - of TV newsman Ted Baxter, played by Ted Knight.

"It's given me such joy", said Engel, who had hoped to see it move to Broadway.

We send our thoughts and condolences to Georgia's loved ones during this hard time.

Engel reunited with "Mary Tyler Moore's" Gavin MacLeod in 2018.
