'Game of Thrones' premiere draws heavy 17.4M viewers

This land could use a ruler like Sansa Stark

Fans of the medieval saga had to wait almost two years for a new development after the showrunners wanted more time write the final six episodes. In the season eight premiere, Samwell Tarly comes across Bran sitting in the square at night.

The season premiere - one of the most anticipated television events in history - aired at 9 p.m. EST last night for millions of Game of Thrones fans across the U.S. (and indeed, over here, for those of us willing to stay up until 2am).

Click through the below slideshow or read through the list to see all the references, callbacks and comparisons and we caught from Season 1 and beyond! The first episode was basically a detailed form of what we saw in the trailer. After a long wait of two years, the first episode of Game Of Thrones season 8 went on air today. They have to be ready to face a war with the Night King and his army.

The season premiere burned up Twitter, with fans saying they were left "speechless" by the episode.

Another viewer said the premiere was "well done", especially those reunions. "He's got no eyelids now", one of the women says.
