The Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal rivalry by the numbers

After a year and a half, the tennis fans had the chances to see another chapter of the fantastic rivalry between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal after both tennis legends managed to qualify for the semifinal in Indian Wells.

The multiple Grand Slam champions both won their quarter-finals on Friday, although Nadal in particular had to work hard to overcome Russian Karen Khachanov 7-6 (2) 7-6 (2) in a match during which he required treatment on the knee.

"It's not my case", he said. "It's been quite a journey with Rafa side by side".

Federer has won each of the last five meetings, but Nadal holds a 23-15 lifetime head-to-head edge.

It would have been the first meeting between the pair since 2017.

"Different styles, different ways to understand the sport".

"It's tough for me to accept all these things that I'm going through in my career".

Nadal took a medical time-out after the third game of the second set to have tape applied under his right knee and looked in serious discomfort before battling to a 7-6 (2) 7-6 (2) victory, saving a set point to avoid being pushed to a decider. He's at a higher level than he was at the Australian Open.

He also says he won't play again until the Monte-Carlo Masters clay event in mid-April. "I can not guarantee how I'm going to wake up tomorrow morning".
