After exiting a limousine outside the restaurant, Castellano and his underboss, Thomas Bilotti, were approached by three men in trench coats who shot them each about six times, the New York Times reported at the time.

On Wednesday, a little after 9 p.m., Cali - who went by Frank rather than Francesco- was shot multiple times in the torso outside of his Staten Island home, New York Police Department confirms to PEOPLE.

The Gambino Family was once among the most powerful criminal organizations in the USA, but federal prosecutions in the 1980s and 1990s sent its top leaders to prison and diminished its reach.

At this time, police have made no arrests and Cali's death is under investigation. "The man was on the ground face-up. His head was by his SUV, and the truck was open", the witness told the outlet.

After his release, the feds tried to bar him from meeting with members of the Sicilian Mafia, and demanded that he avoid contact with his uncle, Giovanni Gambino - the nephew of late boss Carlo Gambino, for whom the family was named - except at weddings or holiday celebrations approved in advance.

Rudolph W. Giuliani, who at the time was the United States Attorney for the Southern District of NY, condemned the killings and vowed to find those responsible. The house is listed under the name of Rosaria Inzerillo.

According to reports, Cali's death marks the highest ranking member of a NY crime family to be murdered in decades.

The Genovese, Gambino, Lucchese, Colombo and Bonanno mafia families are believed to have controlled organised crime in NY for decades.

Gotti died of cancer in prison in 2002. However, he kept a relatively low profile for the most part.

Cali had been considered a unifying figure in the crime family, in the years after John Gotti was convicted and sent to prison by cooperating mob witnesses. Some of the indictments included murder, drug trafficking, robbery and extortion, according to The Mob Museum.
