Commenting on O'Rourke's decision to enter the race, RNC communications director Michael Ahrens said "it's telling that the Democrats' biggest star is someone whose biggest accomplishment is losing".

O'Rourke is expected to immediately set out on a campaign swing through Iowa, which holds the first Democratic nominating contest in February 2020.

Trump told reporters Thursday in the Oval Office that O'Rourke, who just announced that he's running for president, uses his hands so much that it might indicate he's "crazy".

With his presidential effort, O'Rourke is hoping to leverage the fame he gained with his Senate race.

"I'm really proud of what El Paso did and what El Paso represents", he wrote.

In 2018 speculation began that Mr O'Rourke may decide to run after his campaign for the US Senate proved his worth.

Fellow Texan Julian Castro distributed a list of Texas Democrats who had already gotten behind the former federal housing chief's campaign. "I've never seen so much hand movement I said, 'Is he insane or is that just the way he acts?'" Trump said during an Oval Office appearance with Ireland's prime minister.
