The eight who have so far this flu season range in age from 41 years old to 83 years old. A total of 185 flu-linked child deaths were reported last season, up from 110 the season before. More than 200 people have been hospitalized for the flu.

Two more children have died in connection with the flu as activity picked up in the US last week, according to an update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A Health Department spokeswoman said yesterday the number of notified flu cases this year was almost double that for the same time last year but still much lower than the number of reported during the winter season.

The Tennessee Department of Health reports that Knoxville and Knox County has 11.8% of patients visiting clinics with influenza.
